Work, Eat, Drink

“This is what we do on St. John. We work, we eat, and then we have happy hour,” explained Gigi.

Gigi works at The Doghouse, part of the Jolly Dog Trading Company empire. A snowbird from New Hampshire, she grew up in the Boston area where my mom grew up. At 14 she was jumping on the trolley and traveling between Brookline, Newton and other Boston ‘burbs to go dancing.

Gigi went to the all girls school at the Holy Cross Academy where the classes bored her. She spent her time envisioning new interiors for the dreary classrooms that eventually became condominiums.

As soon as our guest Helen Rock finished purchasing T-shirts for her family, Gigi asked if it was happy hour yet.

“It’s always five o’clock somewhere,” I said.

“Oh, it’s four o’clock here,” Gigi replied and headed to the bar for a glass of white wine at Skinny Legs, the beach burger bar at Coral Bay.
