Michael’s theme song rang in our ears as he rowed our disabled dinghy ashore this morning. Alleluia! The theme song quickly morphed into Billy Preston’s “Will It Go Round in Circles”* as I took over the oars.
The Tohatsu starter assembly crumbled yesterday as we returned from Trunk Bay with a Happy Times-load full of people. We anchored inside Cowpet Bay, and most of the Foster family gamely swam ashore along with their guest Lauren, our friend Terry Haggard and Mikayla. The water taxi from St. Thomas Yacht Club took the others ashore while Mike and I pondered our dinghy dilemma.
Like many other cruisers, Mike keeps an inventory of parts on board Happy Times: for the Volvo engines, the toilet, the generator, the Magna grill and, yes, the dinghy. Unfortunately, the replacement cord refused to crank the motor by hand, so we stayed on board, sipped on a cold one and decided to put off the dingy repair until morning.
Jim Haggard took Mike and the starter assembly ashore. (James has served as our driver this week. We probably should have purchased a chauffeur’s cap for him.) Fortunately, Gary’s Marine Service had a rebuilt Tohatsu starter assembly that a customer had ordered and failed to pick up. Mike was happy to buy it at half the price of a new one. Alleluia!
The new starter assembly worked, and Mike was able to motor, not row, back to HT.
*Henry Butlerdoes a powerful rendition of this song on his PiaNOLA Live CD.
