Out of 40 cruisers playing poker in today’s Poker Run, our daughter Mikayla came in fourth place and $64 went into her pocket. Sometimes a break from biology and pre-calculus really pays off.
Every year a volunteer from the Rio Dulce organizes the event. Susie and John Gerber of the powerboat Cabaret put together this one and it ran flawlessly. Cruisers met first at Mar Marine to sign up for the Poker Run and pick up their materials. At 10 a.m. they headed down the river and picked up a playing card at one of seven stops. They included Mario’s Marina, Vista Rio, Moko Point, Bruno’s, Nana Juana Resort, Backpackers Hotel and Restaurant, and Tijax. Most of the hosting facilities extended a happy hour special, provided free beverages or offered complimentary hors d’oeuvres.
The cruisers already were excited about the possibility of winning a haulout from Abel’s Boatyard in the silent auction or one of the top five cash prizes. Other prizes included a case of beer, a gift certificate for horseback riding, a massage, and a three-night stay at Amatique Bay Resort. That encouraged everyone to return to Mar Marine by the 2 p.m. deadline.
The weather on the river was beautiful with a light breeze that kept the temperature comfortable. Around 3 p.m. the chop blew up as it often does, making the trip downriver to Mario’s a wet ride. It didn’t bother our winner at all.
